When your SIP calls are working normally, which is most of time, you really don't care what your SIP ports are. For this reason, each provider tends to have a different set of ports. Providers are free to use whichever numbers they wish for their SIP traffic ports. There are other ways that providers thwart these attempts but we will leave that for another day. This is because hackers will likely try to break into your system at some point and guess what port they start with. The popularity of using port 5060 for SIP has become rather problematic over the years. This is often referred to as SIP RTP ports and tends to be in the 10000 to 30000 range.
The actual audio packets are sent using RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol) and this uses different port numbers from the control channel. Keep in mind this is just for the call control. In order to control the SIP based call, communication is sent over the control channel and the most popular number for this is port 5060. SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is the protocol that is used for VoIP and, as you likely are aware, this voice data is broken into digital packets and sent over the Internet. The port numbers vary between 0 and 65,535. It will transfer information via its virtual port number. By having its own unique virtual port, the application can share the same physical port as another application without interference.
